Rennes

The Capital Of Brittany

For ten days at the beginning of July, Rennes lets its hair down at the Tomb'es de la Nuit Festival, a celebration of Breton music and culture. For the rest of the year the city reverts to its role as dignified capital of Brittany; it is a neoclassical town rebuilt in 1720 after much of the centre was destroyed by fire. Worth a visit are the 16th-century Law Courts, which miraculously survived the fire, the Mus'e de Bretagne, the Mus'e des Beaux-Arts, and the 19th-century Cath'drale St Pierre, which contains an elaborately carved wooden altarpiece in a side chapel. The medieval quarter, situated near the Portes Mordelaises-the remnants of the city's ramparts, has a very lively nightlife!
